How a Simple Foosball Table Sparked a National Conversation on Diversity in Peru

The Peruvian Reality: A Nation Divided by Discrimination

In Peru, a staggering 3 out of 4 citizens have admitted to experiencing discrimination from fellow Peruvians. Despite being a country rich in diversity—where over 30 languages are spoken, and regions like the highlands, coast, and jungle bring a mix of customs and traditions—Peru remains deeply fragmented by cultural and racial differences.

Adidas’ Bold Move: Diversity on a Table

Recognizing this divide, Adidas, the official sponsor of Peru’s national football team, decided to tackle the issue head-on—through foosball. They launched The People’s Foosball, a project aimed at turning a simple table game into a powerful metaphor for unity. But this was no ordinary foosball table. Each player figurine was carefully designed and hand-painted by local artists to represent various real-life Peruvian heroes, from fishermen and chefs to athletes and artisans. It wasn’t just a game; it was a statement.

Adidas’ initiative invited people from all corners of Peru to come together and play on the foosball table, each game becoming a platform for discussing the importance of diversity. Through this project, they managed to transform an everyday activity into a symbol of national pride and unity. The conversations started at the foosball table quickly spread to social media, amplifying the message that Peruvians, no matter their background, should be playing on the same team.

Sparking Conversations Beyond the Game

This wasn’t just about a clever marketing campaign. The People’s Foosball became a symbol, encouraging Peruvians to embrace their differences while working together for a more inclusive future. By taking a light-hearted approach to a serious issue, Adidas demonstrated how even the smallest actions can create a ripple effect, inspiring bigger, more meaningful conversations about unity in sports and beyond.
