The Biggest Mistakes You Might Be Making in Your SEO Campaign

common SEO mistakes

Nowadays, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) campaigns are the order of the day. Especially for startups or small businesses, it represents a successful strategy at a very low cost that can give them the visibility they desire. SEO is a complex world, though, and not knowing some of its most intricate aspects might have a bad impact on your campaign. If you can prevent the most common SEO issues and familiarize yourself with concepts such as “keyword cannibalization”, it’ll take your SEO campaign to the next level.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process by which you can improve your site’s visibility in search engines such as Google, Bing, or Yahoo. Usually, people don’t go as far as the second results page so you have to make sure you are among the first results. You can make it with different elements, such as your site’s aspect, its content, and how it is structured. The heart of SEO is keywords, which are certain words or phrases that people use when searching for specific topics. Broadly speaking, your site should contain keywords that align with your product or service.

Worldwide famous newspapers have articles about SEO, which proves it’s a driving force behind modern digital marketing. But for some people, it is a complex world and usually needs further explanation, especially when it comes to keywords. They can have irregular behavior, so which means they need constant updates, and some issues such as keyword cannibalization should be taken into account. Once you are familiar with SEO’s most critical aspect, you can use it to your advantage and use it to take the next step of your marketing campaign.

Although SEO is one of the most powerful marketing campaigns, and since it’s almost cost-free and is very effective for startups or small businesses, some people are still falling for the most common SEO issues. The problem usually relies on people associating SEO with keyword search, but it goes beyond that and nowadays search engines’ algorithms have evolved to analyze and discriminate the content in very refined terms.

The first thing you should have in mind is that it’s not all about words, pictures matter too. This means that your site should flow smoothly across a wide array of devices, from desktop computers to laptops, mobile devices, or even smartwatches! In order to do this, you should optimize images by compressing their since to make them accessible across all of these devices. This means not only making it smaller in size but also compressing it in such a way that the user doesn’t have to swipe from left to right to see the whole picture.

Another important element is that it’s not a once-in-a-lifetime procedure. You should continuously monitor your site’s performance. To accomplish this, you can use sites such as SEMrush or Keyword Tool Dominator. By checking your site’s critical issues and fixing them as soon as possible, you will avoid dropping in search engine results.

Last but not least, believe it or not, you can be a victim of over-optimization. Packing your site’s content with keywords won’t lead to a better ranking. On the contrary, if you abuse these techniques they will end up affecting your campaign. You should use keywords that are essential for your product or services and use them in a natural, organic way that doesn’t affect the quality of your content. Usually, quality over quantity is key to any SEO campaign’s success. Remember that search engines prioritize clear and concise content, so grammar and syntax are relevant to SEO, too.

Watch Out for Keyword Cannibalization

Maybe you have heard the phrase “keyword cannibalization”, and it might sound like a hard-to-solve issue. But the truth about keyword cannibalization is that it isn’t rocket science and it can be easily fixed. First things first: keyword cannibalization refers to when many websites use the same keyword targeted to the same results. This can affect your campaign since it weakens the overall effect of that keyword. This is one of the reasons why you shouldn’t think of SEO as a monolithic thing, keywords change from day to day and the use websites make of keywords changes too.

To avoid keyword cannibalization, you should conduct serious research about the topic you are working with and optimize your site with unique and relevant words. As we mentioned before, in the SEO world you should always consider quantity over quality, and creative content has more quality to it than covering the same topics everyone is talking about. It seems counterintuitive, but sometimes using unpopular keywords is more effective than doing the thing everyone else is doing, especially if you are a startup or a small business wanting to create a community.
